Behind a bevy of powerful engines and a long list of standard safety features, the 2021 Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV that remains a perennially popular choice, with more than 8 million vehicles sold since its inception in 1991. Trim Levels (Exterior)
You can choose among five trims with the 2021 Explorer: base, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. After undergoing a complete redesign for 2020, the 2021 models remain relatively unchanged. The base trim comes with LED headlights and daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a powered tailgate. The XLT trim has a brand-new optional Sport Appearance package, which adds exterior accents and 20-inch alloy wheels.
Engine (Power)
To get you where you need to go, the 2021 Explorer has three powerful engine options. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The other two twin-turbocharged V-6 engines develop 365 horsepower with the Platinum trim and 400 horsepower with the ST trim. Both V-6 engines also produce 415 pound-feet of torque. All three engines are mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive comes standard on the two upper trims. Otherwise, the trims come with rear-wheel drive.
Performance
The 2021 Explorer attains excellent fuel economy numbers compared to others in its class. With the base engine and rear-wheel drive, expect to get 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive and the base engine gives you 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Either V-6 engine gets 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
In its standard configuration, the Explorer seats seven people. However, if you opt for second-row captain's chairs, that number lowers by one. The front seats are comfortable and give you excellent outward visibility. If you plan on hauling items inside the Explorer, you will appreciate its spacious cargo area. You get 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row, but folding down these seats increases the area to 47.9 cubic feet. Folding down both the second and third rows gives you 87.8 cubic feet.
The easy-to-use standard SYNC 3 interface comes paired with an 8-inch touch-screen display, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Available upgrades include a 10.1-inch touch-screen display, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
Safety Features
The Explorer comes with an abundance of standard safety features found in the Co-Pilot360 suite. Some of these features include blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and side wind stabilization. It also includes Ford's MyKey, which allows you to program audio and speed limits for secondary drivers. There are also several safety upgrades found in the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite, including speed limit sign recognition, evasive steering assist, and post-impact braking.
Thanks to this impressive list of safety features, the National Traffic Safety Administration gave the Explorer a perfect five-star overall safety rating. The SUV also earned five stars for the frontal and side crash tests.
