2021 Explorer Performance: Test the Limits
The Ford Explorer was engineered to be your getaway machine, giving you an exciting performance that is equally smooth and capable.
First of all, you’ll have your choice of three engines, all offering something unique to suit different driving needs.
- 2.3L EcoBoost®: This turbocharged engine comes standard in the 2021 Explorer generating a robust 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This lets you tow up to 5,300 pounds when properly equipped with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 city/29 highway MPG.
- 3.0L EcoBoost® V6: Need more oomph? This twin-turbocharged engine boasts up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, perfect for off-roading and towing. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,600 pounds, the most towing capacity available for the Explorer.
- 3.3L Hybrid: For greener driving without sacrificing power, opt for the available hybrid engine that gives you a total system horsepower of 318 and up to 322 lb-ft of torque. This means you can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the proper equipment while saving money when filling up the tank.
All engines of the Explorer come paired with a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. For extra traction and control, especially off the pavement, Intelligent 4WD (four-wheel drive) is available.
